Skylights in your home or office offer many Benefits!

Homeowners will benefit by installing Skylights

It’s still true, skylights are often seen as a luxury addition to your home or office, but they can actually be a green home improvement addition if done correctly. Skylights literally are windows on your roof that open up a space allowing clear views of the bright blue sky during the day and beautiful starry views at night.  Adding skylights to your home will provide the interior rooms with the warmth and brightness of natural daylight, white still making your space feel larger and more comfortable!

Aside from the aesthetic benefits you will also notice health and energy efficiency benefits associated with skylights. Its been scientifically proven that exposure to healthy natural light can improve your overall mood and increase productivity (Dark areas make us feel tired and unproductive), this is because skylights manufactured today use a glazing that blocks/reflects harmful UV rays while allowing healthy light through.  Also, with all the new natural light you will save energy by reducing your reliance on electric lighting.

Helpful Skylight Tips and Benefits:

1. Double or Triple Pane Skylights Only: Double pane skylights will reduce heat loss by up to 20% compared to single pane skylights.  (Never use dome skylights in your home unless you want to heat/cool your entire neighborhood).  By using a double or triple pane skylight versus a single pane or dome skylight you can save up to $2,500 over the life of the skylight.

2. Make sure the Skylight has Low E Glazing: Low-emittance (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window or skylight glazing surface primarily to reduce the U-factor by suppressing heat flow. The principal mechanism of heat transfer in multilayer glazing is thermal radiation from a warm pane of glass to a cooler pane. Coating a glass surface with a low-emittance material and facing that coating into the gap between the glass layers blocks a significant amount of this radiant heat transfer, thus lowering the total heat flow through the window.

3. Reduce your reliance on Artificial Lighting: Natural lighting is the single biggest attraction of installing skylights, with benefits that far exceed lower utility bills. Well-lit homes provide homeowners with healthier, more enjoyable, and more attractive living spaces.

4.  Venting Skylights Recycle Your Homes Air: Poor air quality in your home is a major reason for a wide variety of health issues we are experiencing in America today.  When stagnant air is in your home all the germs and bacteria are stuck in the air for your breath over and over. When adding a venting skylight to your ceiling you are able to recycle the air in your home through ventilation.  Air will naturally start to cycle through your home.
